What is personal growth?
In a nutshell, personal growth is preventive care for mental health. Personal growth is not a one-time activity. It is a lifelong process. It's about making wellness a priority. It's the practice of focusing on positive activities so you're motivated to get up in the morning. It's about building confidence. It's about paying attention to your patterns so you develop habits that help you get what you want out of life. And if you don't know what you want out of life, our work together will help you figure that out.
Personal growth involves knowing how to tend your mental wellbeing on a daily basis - learning what mental wellbeing is, recognizing what it looks like, and applying the skills to develop and protect it.
Here are some of the areas we’ll focus on:
Sizing up your self-talk
Challenging your limiting beliefs
Building and safeguarding your self-esteem
identifying your values
Expanding your psychological flexibility
Assessing the trade-offs you’re faced with
Dissecting and solidifying your boundaries
Honing your social skills
Sharpening your professional skills
Determining your priorities
Pursuing your goals
Refining your purpose
Satisfying your passions
Focusing on these areas will improve your self-esteem, elevate your critical thinking skills, enhance your interpersonal skills, endow you with time management skills, vitalize your perception of value in the people and activities in which you invest your efforts, and fine-tune your overall happiness. The way you set and measure your standards will rejuvenate your quality of life.
Paths to Improvement
One of the clinical methods that works well for personal growth therapy is CBT, which stands for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. You might be familiar with that term, but do you know what it means? Cognitive behavioral therapy is therapy that focuses on how your thoughts and behaviors affect each other. It looks at patterns of thinking and behaving and replaces patterns that are causing problems for you with new patterns that serve you better. When it comes to personal growth and self-esteem, what you’re not doing matters as much as what you are doing. We’re going to address both.
How We Get There
If you're the sort of person who’s drawn to articles that offer productivity hacks and success tips, then you’re a personal growth enthusiast. You thrive on challenging yourself, but you don’t always know where to begin, which is why you’re constantly doing “research.” That’s where I come in. Personal growth psychotherapy is a high-end speciality service for people who want access, attention, and answers. We will pick apart your patterns and figure out what's working for you and what's not.
These are some of the phrases and questions you’ll hear from me a lot:
What’s your part in things?
How does this serve you?
Is what you're doing going to get you what you want?
Is this consistent with your values?
What need is this meeting?
Play the tape through.
I use a strength-based approach. That doesn’t mean we ignore the past. Where you’ve been and what you’ve been through is relevant as a source of explanation and meaning. The past arms you with information. I arm you with tools to help you empower yourself. Abraham Maslow called that self-actualization. If you’re interested in empowering yourself, let’s get started. Let's connect what you want with what you're doing.
There are tons of excellent resources out there on personal growth, also known as personal development or self-improvement. But between work, family, and leisure, most people don’t have time to scour through all the content that's available in the hopes of finding trustworthy sources that offer valuable and easy-to-understand content. I did that for you, and while we work together, you’ll have plenty of content to digest and internalize. Sometimes you’ll have the time and inclination to read, sometimes you’ll want to listen or watch, and sometimes you’ll want to write. I provide options so you can delve in using the learning method that works best for you on any particular day.
In addition to articles, videos, and interactive e-learning, I make books and workbooks available for your viewing at no additional cost. I’m able to share them through your learning center the same way I would if I were to loan you a book to take home. You won’t be able to download them, but my purchase of them allows me to share them with clients in your password-protected learning center. I will also teach you how to locate good resources without needing to rely on someone else to provide them. Finding relevant and useful resources is a transferable skill - a skill you can use in real life, not just in therapy.
